A former charter school basketball coach has been charged with sexually assaulted two of his students. Jamel Helaire Jones, 32, was accused having a sexual relationship with the students last fall at the Legal Prep Charter Academy in Chicago’s West Garfield Park neighborhood, and is facing felony criminal assault charges. Prosecutors said for most of the last school year, he was engaging in sex acts with the students in his car, in the gym and in locker room at the school.
They said he carried on relationships with two teen girls while he was a coach at the school. Both girls were between 14 and 17, and both played on the school basketball team. Prosecutors said the relationships allegedly went on from February to October of last year. In a statement, Legal Prep Academy said it took immediate action and notified authorities once they learned of the allegations in November. Read Legal Prep Academy's statement: "Legal Prep's top priority is to ensure students have a safe and welcoming learning environment. Legal Prep is working closely with the affected students and families to ensure they receive the support they need." Helaire Jones was also accused of sexual assault in Michigan over a decade ago and served time for robbery. He is being held without bond, and has a court appearance at the end of the month.
